Sunbeams = Sunlight

Well I wasn't planning an entry for today but I just had to document my gratitude for a happy day. Jeff and I have been the Sunbeams teachers in our church for about 7 months. Although it is a calling with its challenges and you sometimes don't feel like you fit in, it is also a wonderful one! I feel so blessed to get to soak in these special little spirits. Their innocence and precious, little smiles are enough to melt anyone's hearts. I love watching their concentration as they are listening or learning something new, and watching their eyes light up when they see you. It truly makes my day! I don't take the time to appreciate it to this extent every week. Sometimes I just think of how tired I am and how I don't know if we're making a difference at all. Sometimes I wonder if it even matters if we are there or not because I'm not sure they are hearing anything I say. But then I get a hug from one of them or they beg to sit on my lap during Sharing Time or they tell me that they love me...and it makes it all worth it.

Another thing that makes it special is the opportunity of watching my husband teach these little ones. My love for him grows every time because I see him let down his guard and I watch their little spirits go to work on his heart. I can't help but feel my heart grow on those days. He doesnt think he is good at this calling but I think he's perfect. He always brings special props and experiments to teach his lessons and those kids eat it up. I am so thankful that if only for today, I was able to sit back and bask in the glory of these perfect little beings. They, and Jeff, brought such a peace to my day. We have such a wise Heavenly Father that thought to send these angels to earth so innocent and fresh so that we fall in love with them from the very beginning. I know it has worked on me.

Moonlight Bites

Last night was our annual "Moonlight Ride." This is a bike ride at Antelope Island that is held on the night of a full moon. It begins at 10PM so that you can enjoy the beauty of the full moon. Since Jeff worked at the county beginning in 1993, we have only missed this event twice. One was the night of his grandfather's viewing and the other was last year, when it was the only time we could squeeze in a 4-wheeling trip to the cabin before Josh left.

This year, with the release of the movie "Eclipse", the theme of the bike ride is "Moonlight Bites." The boys in our family serve as the mascots so this year, they got to dress up like Vampires. As you can imagine, we didn't have to twist any arms. Although they are not into the Twilight series, they all love vampire movies.

This shows a little of the preparation...

And the final product. Scary, huh?
Gotta love the purple hairspray to top it off. And man, that stuff stinks!

Here they are out at the Island. As you can see, the sun was pretty bright and it was hot!! We have to get there pretty early, like 6:30 PM, since we volunteer. It's hard to keep the make-up from melting off them when it's this hot. Luckily, that purple hairspray and some "special" gel of Josh's kept their hair slicked right back for the whole night. (More on that later)
Here is our family portrait- 1/2 vampires, 1/2 humans.
And here, we found Maddy a cape to go with her purple hair. She couldn't let her brothers use purple hairspray and not her!
She's too cute to be a vampire.

And last but not least, I had to show the bugs that Maddy and I endured to volunteer at Registration. I told her we were only going to there a couple of hours and we ended up staying until almost 11. And as you can see, it wasn't fun once we had to turn on the lights. There were bugs and mosquitoes everywhere! Maddy was a trooper, though. In the past, it has been our tradition to help out for a little while and then have a "Girl's Night." In the spirit of true volunteerism, Maddy got a little cheated this year. We still went home to watch a "chick flick" together but we both fell asleep before it was half way over. Oh well, we still had fun.
But the real story of the night didn't start until 2:00AM. As I mentioned above, we were worried about keeping the boys' hair slicked back all night. Josh offered his "special" gel. This is gel he found in Georgia that is made especially for African American hair. Josh's hair soaks up everything quickly (we used to call him "Grizzly Bear Hair") so this works really well for his gel. The key is that he only uses a teeny bit. Well they thought if a little bit worked, alot would be even better. Big mistake! After Jeff had washed his hair like 5 times to no avail, we realized we had a problem. Second, we tried Dawn dishsoap since it is supposed to "take grease out of the way." No go. Then Jeff had me bring in the GoJo out of the garage that is supposed to remove grease and oil off your hands. All it did for Jeff's hair was burn his scalp. Duh! I warned him. :)
Finally, after finding out that the ingredients consisted of petroleum jelly and fragrance, I started researching on the Internet. It was approximately 3AM at this point. They had several suggestions, including dishsoap, cornstarch, and olive oil. Jeff tried olive oil and dishsoap about 3 more times and it seemed to help. Luckily, that trick licked it for Jake. Jeff still had to go through that process about 3 more times the next morning but all is well now. Let's just say they shouldn't have to use conditioner for awhile. Funny side note: Josh said it came out of his hair in just a couple of washings. He must have used less than them. By the time that ordeal was over, we were so keyed up that Jake and I started a video at 4AM. I don't think my kids will forget this one for several years. Fun memories!

Toy Story 3 and Lessons of Life

I LOVED this movie!!

It always amazes me how touching Disney movies can be. They always have such great messages. Toy Story 3 was no different. I have loved the other 2 Toy Stories but this one even tops those. It is creative and funny and sentimental. And it portrayed so many things that I am feeling at this point in my life.

Both of our boys have always reminded us of Disney characters, especially when they were younger. Josh was Eeyore- very laid back and hard to ruffle, and Jake was Tigger- hyper and very energetic, he seemed to "bounce" wherever he went just like Tigger. Josh also always reminded us of Woody - loyal and caring, yet still laid back. And Jake is more like Buzz Lightyear - straight to action. Watching this movie reminded me of this all over again. As they showed old pictures of the other Toy Story movies when Andy was little, it made me wish that I had documented my children's younger years better. It continues to amaze me how memories you think you will never forget, seem to fade away so quickly. Things I loved so much that I thought I would never let go, now exist only in my heart. Now, much of my child-rearing years (at least small children) are behind me and I am my kids maturing and preparing to leave home. I think that is why I especially related to this movie because Andy is heading off to college. It is a message about letting go and moving on. And anyone that knows me, knows I do NOT like change! I struggle with it greatly. Part of it is my sentimental and sensitive personality but the other part is - I like my comfort zone. In this movie, I felt like the toys. I feel like my whole life is about my children. They are my highlight, my purpose in life and the result and reward of all my hard work. This is the way I like it. So I, like Andy's toys, have a very difficult time letting go. But once again, Disney has taught me a lesson. Letting go doesn't have to mean the end. It can actually be a whole new beginning, for everyone. Ultimately- Andy truly loved his toys, enough to let them go. Although they were all willing to sit in his attic for him to treasure occasionally, he allowed them to go so that someone else could experience his joy and his toys could be happy and have purpose. I am looking for the strength to do just that. As Josh can attest, I am not very good at it yet. I hope to get better at it or it will be a painful process for both me and my kids. But I am trying. My favorite part of the movie is when Andy's Mom gets emotional and tells him that she wishes she could always be with him. Andy answers simply, "You will be, Mom."

This is my prayer.

Summer Bingo

Okay now that June is nearly over, I am trying to get organized before summer passes us by. I know us and if we don't get some things organized and scheduled, we will get in our crazy day-to-day routine and look back wondering where the time went. So... I finally got the family together for Family Home Evening last night to make some fun (and not-so-fun) plans for summer.

Of course, summer should be about lazy days, exploring and using your imagination, sleeping in, adventure, and simply doing nothing at all if you don't want to (at least at certain times.)However, it's also a great time to get caught up on a few projects and chores that you don't usually have your children home to help with. Since they are so busy during the school year, I like to take it easy on them through those weeks but recruit them during the summer for a little extra help. I also believe this teaches them responsibility, hard work, and seeing the fruits of your labor. Plus, it helps our home and family get organized and cleaned and although they would never admit it, I think everyone feels better with a clean, organized home and schedule.

In an effort to make work fun and also to keep my kids as productive as possible on the "slow" days of summer, I am trying "Summer Bingo." Hopefully this will be enough incentive for my kids to have a little fun, while also helping themselves improve and our family. I have made BINGO cards with certain activities printed on each square. Some of the activities are fun and some are actual chores. I tried to think of things that would keep them busy, improve them as a person, and keep them on a daily routine. I also threw a few "service" items in there to show them how fun and rewarding service can be. Hopefully they will catch the spirit of that!

Some of the items are:
Read a book - 30 min./day
Read scriptures
Practice piano
Go on a bike ride; Go running
Go on a walk with Mom
Write in journal; Write a letter
Do an act of kindness; Perform an act of service
Play NICELY w/sibling for 1 hr.
Wash a car
Do an outside activity for at least 1 hour
Work on Faith in God/Duty to God
Etc., etc.

The rules are that they have to get 5 in row, with one space being FREE. Once they have earned five in a row, they receive a ticket that can be redeemed for prizes. The best prize is $5 cash, which they can only earn once per week. Otherwise, my smart little whips would be all over those chores/daily responsibilities which would be great...but I'd go broke! So, I had to "cap" the cash prizes. There are still other fun things they can earn, though, like sleepovers or "late nights" with friends, extra TV/Wii/Playstation 3 time, candy, drinks, etc. Like I said, I hope this is enough to keep their interest up in learning responsibility and keeping daily routines, working on things to improve themselves, and especially finding joy in serving others.

Of course we have plenty of fun things we want to do, too. We discussed those so we can make sure to get them on the calendar and make sure we do things that each member of the family wants to do. Some of the things we have come up with are: Swimming- and lots of it!, Lagoon, Drive-in movies, Moonlight Ride, 4-wheeling, family hikes, camping (kind of scary!), sleep out on trampoline, "Friends" party, movies, & on and on....Some major things we want to accomplish this summer that may not be fun during but will be after are finish the basement and Jake's Eagle project. Those are 2 huge things so we'll see how far we get on those. We may not get them completed but it would sure be nice to get them started. Also, Maddy wants to go to Tuahcan and see a play like we did a couple of years ago. We would just go for a couple of nights, just us girls, to swim, shop, and enjoy the outdoor play in the canyon.

So as you can see, we have alot of great ideas and alot of fun to be had! We haven't nailed down an actual family vacation yet but hopefully we will squeeze one of those in by the end of the year, too. Either way, we are planning on having fun and enjoying every minute!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful Fathers in my life!

I am so thankful for the men in my life and for all the things they do for me. The 2 most important are, of course, my own Dad and the Father of my children.

I will start with my own Father. The I have always considered myself being close to my Dad. That feeling has only continued and become even deeper since my Mom passed away. I consider my Dad not only my Dad but also one of my best friends. He has helped me overcome things in the past several years that no one else could help me with. He has spent late nights talking with me, researching things with me, and wiping away my tears during bad times. I can't think about my Dad without tears coming to my eyes because he has shown my what it feels like to be loved unconditionally. I have certainly not been the perfect daughter and have brought my share of stress to his life. But he continues to understand me, not judge me, and love me anyway. He has helped me to understand that I am truly a daughter of God and that I am stronger than I think I am. I am so grateful to him for helping me to believe in myself, for always believing in me, and loving me no matter what. I am also forever grateful for the Priesthood that he holds and the role it has played in my family and my life. I have always felt His protection through my Father. Thanks for all you do, Dad!

Then there is my Father-in-law. I am glad that I have been around for the last 20 years to watch this man grow. Because Jeff is the oldest, we have got to watch his parents raise their younger children. It has been fun to see him grow as a Father and be an example to us in many ways. He has taught his children to work hard. He has taught them the joy they can find in that work. He has been a great example of service and church work over the last several years. And most importantly, he has taught me to love your children through good times, and even more so, through bad. It has been fun to see him grow, in his love for his children and his love for his church. I am so proud of his efforts and his quiet example of love and parenting. Thanks, Ted!

And last but of course, not least, there is Jeff, the Father of my children. It has been so rewarding for me to watch Jeff grow as a Father over the years. Nothing can melt my heart faster than watching him with one of our newborn babies. Jeff loves the cute sounds and fun things that newborns and toddlers do. I always enjoyed watching the sparkle in his eye when he saw them. It was especially neat to see him with a daughter. Although he said he never wanted girls (because he was petrified of them), that all changed the second, and I mean literally "the second" Madelyn was born. She had him wrapped around her little finger from that moment and still does to this day. She softened him and filled him with warmth. I am so happy for the joy he has found in Fatherhood and for the efforts he makes. I know that the role of a Dad is so important and vital in a family and am so proud of the good things he does for his kids. I love you, honey!

"Bouree" Ballerina

Speaking of talents - Here is my little ballerina!Isn't she beautiful?

She dances at the Clytie Adams School of Ballet. And she loves every minute of it! Especially the performances. She has taken dance since she was 3 years old, starting at Clytie's at age 5. It currently costs $55/month and is well worth the money. Her teacher this year was Sarah, who just happens to be Clytie's daughter. Maddy has loved her! There dance is called "Bouree." This has been a really good year as Maddy feels like they are finally getting into the "guts" of Ballet. It was especially fun to watch her in the recital because instead of just movment, ie. skipping, leaping, etc., you could really see the technique of Ballet starting to come through. It was as if she has gone from "little girl" dancing to real Ballet this year. I am so proud of her!

These are her 2 friends, Lindsee and Mikelle (in black & white.) Maddy and Lindsee have taken Ballet (and everything else) together since age 5. Every year they love to get their picture taken together out front. It has been fun to add Mikelle in the last couple of years, since she has been old enough to take dance. They are such cuties!

This is some of Maddy's class patiently(?) waiting in the Auditorium until it is their turn to dance. L to R: ?, Audrey, Maddy, Lexi, and Lindsee.

Maddy and Lindsee. This isn't a great picture because of the spotlights in the Auditorium. Oh well, it's better than nothing.

This is Maddy before the hair and make-up transition. I love to see her sit down and watch her tutu come up and all around her. So cute and so girly!

This is Maddy and Grandpa M. They made the dance recital 2 nights this year. Luckily, Grandpa was able to come and see her the first night. Otherwise, I would have had to sit alone since Jeff and Jake are away at High Adventure and Josh was on a Young Single Adults trip.
Before the recital, we went to eat at one of Maddy's favorite restaurants, Texas Roadhouse. It was yummy and we had a great time! I love to see how happy Maddy is walking around in her costume. I think she feels like a little princess. At least, I hope so! :)

This is Maddy and Grandma O. She came to see Maddy on the 2nd night of the recital. She even took us to dinner at Chili's first. We had a great time on our Girls Nigh Out. She even slept over after so she wouldn't have to drive home alone after dark. (Grandpa was at the cabin) It really made it a special night for Maddy.
Aunt Michelle and Baylee came, too, but I forgot to take the camera with me so I wasn't able to get a picture of them. It was so nice of them to come! Baylee and Maddy took dance together for 2 years when they were just little. We have some fun pictures and memories of the 2 of them together.
And here is Maddy with her beautiful flowers. Usually Jeff brings her flowers each year and it is a highlight. Since he was gone this year, I had to step in. Luckily though, Jeff did get to sneak up to her dress rehearsal before he left town so at least he got to see her practice. I'm sure she will make him watch the DVD with her as well. :)

And finally, here is me and Maddy after a long 4 days of make-up, buns, and late nights. Although we are both pretty tired at the end of it all, I am so thankful that I get to share this with her each year. It is truly a highlight for me and hopefully her, as well.

Summer Fun

I love summer and am SO looking forward to it this year!! The older I get, the more I realize how fast time goes by and especially, how children grow up into teenagers or even worse, they leave the nest. So I want to make sure I take advantage of every moment I have with these kids while they are still young enough to want to be with me. Sadly, I think that could already be fading but they are such good sports to humor me and make me feel like they still enjoy our time together.

I have already witnessed the fading of memories that I never thought I'd forget. I have also watched my children move out of stages that I thought would last forever. I realized that one of my favorite memories with my children was simply watching them swim in a $10 blow-up pool in the backyard or run through the sprinklers. That used to bring such giggles and laughter that it couldn't help but make my days a little brighter and bring a smile to my face. But now, I think my kids have outgrown this and find it a little boring. That's why we have to soak in these moments while we have them and I hope that by recording them here, I can savor each memory with more vivid detail before they fade too far in the past.

Some things I am especially looking forward to (if it every stops raining and being freezing cold, that is):

Staying up late watching movies as a family (especially "Andy's" - we LOVE the Andy Griffith Show at our house, so many wonderful learning lessons), sleeping in, Grilling, dinners outside enjoying the sound of the waterfall, Otter Pops, Ice Cream, Watermelon, Fresh Fruits & Veggies-Yum!, trips to the park, walks, Corn-on-the-Cob (another favorite), de-junking kids' rooms and getting organized, sleeping on the tramp (if we don't get eaten alive by mosquitoes, swimming, and so much more. What a wonderful time of the year to reconnect with family, goals, and enjoy a little reprieve from all the work throughout the year.

So here's to summer and memories yet to be made - Bring it on!

School's out!!

We survived 4th great and 8th grade...not only survived, but thrived!!! Both Jake and Maddy have had a great school year. We are so excited for summer but will miss the teachers and friends we have had. This is Maddy and her teacher, Mrs. Snow. Maddy has loved her class and made wonderful friends. The great thing about this year is she had a great group of girls in her class that all seemed to get along pretty well. She got to particpate in Ballet and even the Nutcracker this year, take piano lessons, play soccer, and had tons of fun with friends. Some of her favorites were Paige, Kennedy, Megan, Libby, Hailey, and Hallee. Here we come 5th grade!

Although Jake wouldn't let me go to the Junior High and get pictures with him and his teachers (understood, of course), he had a great year as well. I can't tell you how proud I am of this kid! He not only got a 4.0 this term but has a cumulative 4.0! He works so hard and shows such great responsibility. It really is a pleasure for me. Some of his highlights of the year were football (of course), soccer, track, and a hunting trip to North Dakota. Some of the friends he hung out with most are Emili, Alex, Alyssa, Ben & Jesse, Cassidy, Talise, and Ben, Christian, & Zach R. It's been a good year but he is looking forward to being a 9th grader. It's hard to believe he's almost in High School. It makes a mom sad to see them grow up before your eyes.

And I had to take them to Krispy Kreme to celebrate their accomplishments. Although they don't love donuts, I thought it would send a good message to them to be rewarded for working hard. (A little cash brings a smile to their faces, as well.) They get a donut for every "A" so each of them scored their own box. And I certainly didn't mind helping them eat their donuts.

I am so proud of these kids and am looking forward to savoring every moment I can with them this summer!

Talents

I am so thankful that my kids have such wonderful talents! I think it is so important to cultivate those things that we love to do and are good at. It shows Heavenly Father how much we appreciate all that He has given us. It also helps people get to know us better and it helps us to share a bit of ourselves with them. I especially love how talents make us each individuals. There is no one that is exactly like any of us. We are unique and special and one-of-a-kind and our talents help us express who we are.

This week, Maddy has had several wonderful opportunities to share her talents with not only her family, but alot of people. I am so proud of her willingness and courage to do this! It is so fun to watch her foster friendships and share her "true loves" with other people. I can see it bring her closer to others and more confident in herself. Who wouldn't want that for their child, right?
This is Maddy and her friend, Kennedy Stettler. For their class talent show, they decided to perform 2 different numbers - 1 hula hoop routine and 1 dance, that they made up themselves. I was so proud of them! I think that would be so scary to get up in front of your whole class and dance, but they did it!
And they did it with smiles on their faces. As you can see, Maddy caught a serious case of the giggles. It was so fun to see them express themselves in such creative, wholesome ways and to know that they were enjoying every minute. Their enthusiasm and smiles were definitely contagious. Way to go girlies!
Next, on June 5, Maddy had another chance to share a different talent. I love the end of the school year that affords us so many opportunities to see first-hand what our children have been learning and working on all year. This time it was Maddy's piano recital and she did such a beautiful job!

It was held in the Auditiorium of the the Layton City Library on Saturday at 4PM.

Maddy always performs so gracefully and doesn't even seem to be nervous. Today had not been a great day but you would never know by hearing Maddy play. She throws herself into the music and all of her hard work takes over and pays off. She played 2 numbers this year. Her first was "Part of Your World" from Little Mermaid. Much to her brothers' dismay, Maddy memorized this piece early on and has been rehearsing it for well over a month - over and over again. I love hearing it but the boys didn't appreciate it as much as I did. Her second number was "Habanera," accompanied by Debbie Dee (her teacher) on the Violin. Wow! It sounded awesome! I just can't believe how far Maddy has come in 3 years and the violin just put the exclamation point on her performance. I was so proud of her!
Here, Maddy is receiving a special award for being the "Most Natural Accompaniest." That is quite an honor considering that she only spotlights about 5 students each year.
And this is Maddy's piano teacher, Debbie Dee, performing an amazing piece. She always plays in the recital each year and I think it is such an opportunity for her students to see her in action. I am so grateful to have her as a teacher - she is an incredible musician, playing not only the piano but the organ, violin, cello, harp, and flute. She only charges $60/month for 1-30 min. lesson per week. I consider it a priviledge for Maddy to study under her. It was such a special day to watch my cute Maddy as she so willingly shared her talents with us. I am watching her grow so quickly in so many things and it makes my heart ache just a little. I know by experience, that this precious time will be gone in the blink of an eye. But I am enjoying every minute of it and I hope she is, too.
I am so blessed to have such talented children. They are each talented in their own ways. Some of us have physical talents, some musical, some spiritual. But they are all talents. It is my prayer to be able to continue to watch my children grow in their talents, whatever they may be and whatever they would like them to be. I want to support them in their dreams and allow them to follow their heart, whereever it leads them. It is their talents and their God-given strengths that define them. I have no doubt that they will lead them somewhere wonderful!

Memories of a Different Grandpa

One of my reasons for starting this blog was to capture not only my current life, but also those memories that I have swelling up inside me that I have never put on paper. It was also to pay tribute to those many wonderful people that I have been blessed with throughout my life. My Grandpa Mayfield is one of those. And I can't pay tribute to Grandpa Stewart (at his recent passing) without also remembering my other Grandpa who has been gone since 1995. His birthday would be celebrated this month so it seems even more appropriate at this time.

I have so many funny things I remember about Grandpa and each one brings a smile to my face. He just had a way of doing that. He always had a story to tell...loudly. And he never forgot details, especially dates. He had an incredible memory. (I wish I would have inherited that!) I say loudly because the older Grandpa got, the louder he spoke. I'm sure it had to do with his hearing but it always made us grandkids laugh. Sadly, I see both Jeff and I doing that already, and we're not even old! (Well our kids think we are) Anyway, I always remember funny things that Grandpa said like "I butter both sides of my toast because my bottom teeth like butter, too." I also remember strange, random things - like that my Grandpa liked peas with warm milk. How strange is that?? Even at my age, I still think that one is odd.

My Grandpa was a collector. He could find a use for just about anything. Even now, 15 years after his death (almost), going through his garage is like going on a treasure hunt for my kids. It is a glimpse of the saver, keeper, fixer-upper that my Grandpa was. Although it scares me a bit now because of dust and spiders, it always brings a smile to my face to go in there because it takes me back to times I spent with him. He would keep tons of baby jars, TONS, and fill them with anything and everything. He could always find a place and purpose for anything. Looking through his stuff is like peeking into his mind. What an adventure! But I think the thing we all think of when he think of Grandpa is duct tape! He could fix anything (and I don't use the word anything lightly) with duct tape. Whether it was a broken tool or a cut finger, he'd slap on a bit of duct tape and it was good as new. It is such a fun reminder of him that we even had to highlight that on the casket at his funeral.

I have many more fun memories with my Grandpa from coming to Utah to visit him and Grandma, to them coming to visit us in Montana. My favorite thing about him is certainly his sense of humor and the way he cracked himself up. That always brought a smile to my face. But I think the thing I value most about my Grandpa Mayfield is the example he set for me of temple work. I remember hearing that Grandpa would often stay for 2 or 3 sessions in 1 day! I am so grateful for him for his testimony of that work and for all of those lives he has undoubtedly blessed. I hope I can honor his name and develop my own steady habits of temple work. It is truly an honor to carry his name. I love you, Grandpa!

Memories of Grandpa

Since it is Memorial Day (yesterday), we thought some lovely frest flowers would perk up the cemetery. So as you can see, Jake cut us some beautiful iris' and lilacs. This is the look I get from him lately when asking him to pose for a picture. (He's just teasing, of course) Luckily, Maddy is still willing to give me a smile. This is me and Maddy at my Mom's grave. Not the place I would like to spend the day with her for sure but I always want her to remember her Grandma and the amazing person that she was.

Sadly, this year (November 2009), we added one more person to visit at the cemetery each year- my Grandpa. He was my Mom's Dad and lived to be 88 years old. I ended up having to speak at his funeral. My sister, being the oldest granddaughter, was supposed to represent the grandchildren but Colton was taken to the Emergency Room with a seizure just a few hours before the funeral. The funeral and spending time with my Mom's family, stirred up alot of feelings for me. I can't think about my Grandpa without thinking about my Mom. But I was happy to pay tribute to him and remember all his good traits.
You couldn't think of Grandpa without picturing him in his cowboy hat. That was one of his most prized possessions. I also love to remember their dairy farm in West Kaysville. That was so fun for me as a little girl to go on vacation to the "farm." I loved going to the milk barn and watching Grandpa milk the cows. But my very most favorite thing was to get to ride their beautiful black horse Smokey. I loved that horse!
2 other funny (well not really funny) stories I remember about visiting the farm was one time when I was riding Smokey, he got too close to a tree that had big branches that spread out over the driveway. Unfortunately, I didn't duck fast enough to avoid my eye getting cut by one of those branches. The other traumatic event I experienced was on an exercise bed of Grandma's. It was some sort of contraption that pulled your stomach in, while laying down, and then spread your body out. (Bad description I know but I have no idea what that thing was.) Somehow, my wrist got caught between one of the springs and pinched/cut the skin. It bled and bruised horribly and has left me with a small scar. Funny the things that kids remember, huh?
I also loved to visit Grandma and Grandpa at the ranch in Montana. There was nothing like it on a summer night. It was amazing to see all the stars! Unfortunately, when you live in the "city", you can't fully enjoy this because the city lights hide alot. But out in the country, when it is pitch dark, the sky lights up with millions of stars. I loved that!! I also remember going to the ranch when Josh was a newborn baby. Jeff was in school so I went with my parents to get out of town for a couple of days. Grandpa brought me out to see some new baby lambs they had. I have a picture of my Mom, baby Josh, and these baby lambs. It is such a treasure to me now! Grandpa always loved to show off his ranch and animals to anyone that was interested. He especially loved anyone to ride around the ranch in his truck with him so that he could tell his stores. Probably my favorite story from the ranch in Montana is Grandpa taking us sledding on tubes behind his truck once. I remember that Lisa and Wende were there and it was such a blast! Going to visit Grandma and Grandpa was truly going "over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go." I have such fond memories of both farms and consider myself a bit of a country girl because I was lucky enough to be a part of it.
But my most favorite memory of my Grandpa, I think, was at my Mother's viewing. He and I had a chance to sit alone for a few, quiet moments and watch the video tribute to my Mom. During a part that showed pictures of my Mom with her brother, Jack, who has also passed away, I looked over and saw tears streaming down my Grandpa's face. I knew at that moment, without a doubt, that he loved my Mother. He squeezed my hand and said, "I miss her, Neecy." What a blessing for me that moment was. I will cherish it in my heart always. I know that life can bring misfortunes and regrets. But it can also bring love and memories. I will always be thankful for those memories I have made with him. I love you, Grandpa!

May you rest in peace.

Memorial Day

These are a few pictures of our bowling adventures. This is about as exciting as today got. Jeff was too tired to go along so we invited my brother, Jeremy. You can tell how thrilled they all were that I brought my camera.

Josh, in action.

Maddy, in action. This shot was taken after she graduated from the "granny" shot to this.

And this is Jake, about to take off with a Strike.

But the winner was this guy - Uncle Jeremy. He told us he couldn't bowl but he had an awesome game! Overall, it was a nice relaxing cap to a nice 3-day weekend.
